Gardeners in Stone

Stone, Bishopstone and Hartwell sit on our main route out of Aylesbury, which makes them easy villages for us to keep on a fixed weekly or fortnightly day. Several gardens on the Oxford Road side have been with us for years.

Because we are so close, we can also fit in the small extras that make a difference — a quick cut before visitors arrive, pots watered in a heatwave, or leaves cleared after a windy week in November.

Plenty of Stone gardens are long rear plots backing onto fields or the old hospital grounds, with mature boundary hedges that need proper annual cutting rather than a quick trim.

Soil here is heavy Vale clay, so lawns compact and sit wet in winter. Aerating in autumn and keeping the cut a little higher in summer makes far more difference than extra feed, and borders repay having grit and compost worked in before planting.
